Islanders complete Southland Men’s Tennis Title Run

BEAUMONT, Texas – To tie a ribbon on the Southland Conference season, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi completed its run through the Southland Men’s Tennis Tournament with a 4-1 victory over No. 2 Lamar at Beaumont Municipal Tennis Court in Beaumont, Texas. The Islanders have now won the last two Southland Tournament titles, the latest serving as the ninth in program history.

A&M-Corpus Christi found its footing early, taking two of three doubles matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions behind Nathan Schwartz and Pascal Lorieul and Borja Delgado and Carlos Berna Ruiz, respectively. Shwartz and Lorieul picked up a 6-4 victory, while Delgado and Ruiz claimed a 6-3 result.
 
The Islanders carried their momentum over to singles play as Guillermo Casteneda pushed his squad ahead 2-0 with a win at No. 6 singles. Lorieul built upon the lead for A&M-Corpus Christi after downing Lamar’s Carlos Paton Canal at the No. 4 spot. Nicolas Mayr gave hope to the Cardinals with a 6-4 and 6-3 win at No. 2, cutting the Islanders’ lead to 3-1, but the effort was not enough. Nathan Schwartz sealed the match for A&M-Corpus Christi with a No. 3 singles victory, winning the opening set in tiebreaker fashion before claiming a 6-3 result to end the match.
 
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has earned the Southland’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, which will begin Friday, May 7. The Islanders will learn their first-round opponent and site during the NCAA selection show, airing Monday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m. on the NCAA website.
