Hanna Alberto Named Southland Women’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Year
FRISCO, Texas – Sam Houston’s Hanna Alberto is the 2020-21 Southland Conference Women’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Wednesday alongside the Academic All-Conference teams. Southland yearly awards are presented by

Alberto claims the second Southland Student-Athlete of the Year honor of her career for Sam Houston after leading the Bearkats to a conference title at the 2021 Southland Championship. In addition to being named a first team all-conference selection, the senior was also tabbed the Women’s Golfer of the Year. She claimed four individual titles this season, including a co-medalist performance at the conference championship, bringing her SHSU career-wins total to a program-best 11 victories. Alberto finished 16
th overall at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and qualified for the 2021 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship this Spring. The Kingwood, Texas, native has now earned a spot on the Southland Academic All-Conference roster for four-consecutive years and currently holds a flawless 4.0 GPA as a MS-Health major.
Joining Alberto on the first team are SHSU teammates Jennifer Herbst and Zulaikah Nasser, Central Arkansas’ Elin Kumlin and Houston Baptist’s Elise Parel, who were all tabbed as automatic selections.
Sam Houston claimed a conference-best five selections on the academic squads, followed by a pair of honorees from Houston Baptist. Central Arkansas, UIW and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi each tabbed one honoree to finalize the academic rosters.
The all-academic teams are voted on by a head coach, sports information director and an academic/compliance staff member from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA and completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to qualify for All-Academic selection.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member schools, votes for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland student-athlete of the year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
