FRISCO, Texas – Sam Houston’s Paul Chaplet and Will Holcomb are the Southland Conference Men’s Golfers of the Year, the league announced Thursday. Southland yearly awards are presented by Ready Nutrition.

For the first time in Southland men’s golf history, there is a tie for the Golfer of the Year award. Fortunately for the Bearkats, the awards will both find homes in Huntsville, Texas, as voting on the conference superlative awards concluded with Chaplet and Holcomb in a tie for the 2021 Golfer of the Year honor. Holcomb led the Southland with an average score of 71.10 throughout the season, while pushing the ‘Kats to a pair of team titles, including the program’s seventh Southland Conference championship in league history. Chaplet was just as integral in the Bearkats’ success and also claimed a pair of medalist honors along the way. After transferring to Sam Houston from Arizona State, Chaplet was also awarded the league’s Newcomer of the Year. Head coach Brandt Kieschnick was named the Southland Coach of the Year after pushing his squad to its third-consecutive Southland Championship.

Lamar’s Pedro Marin earned Freshman of the Year honors after closing out the season with nine tournament appearances and a 74.58 stroke average. Marin competed in 26 rounds throughout the season and pushed the Cardinals to a runner-up finish at the 2021 Southland Championship.

After claiming the 2021 Southland Conference Championship team title, the Bearkats earned a league-best four all-conference honorees. Luis Carrera, Chaplet and Holcomb, a three-time selection, lead the way with spots on the first team, while freshman Ting-Wei Hsieh was named a second-team honoree. Sam Houston closed out the 2021 Southland Conference Championship with three golfers among the top-10 finishers, highlighted by Chaplet, who secured the Southland’s individual title after shooting -3 for the tournament and a 213 over all three rounds.

Abilene Christian and Lamar came in next with three selections apiece. Abilene Christian’s Alex Clouse and Francisco Osio round out the Southland first team after pushing the Wildcats to a third-place finish at the Southland Championship. Clouse makes his third appearance on the all-conference roster and is one of four repeat selections.

Houston Baptist, UIW, McNeese, New Orleans and Stephen F. Austin round out the 2021 Southland All-Conference rosters with one selection each.

All-Conference teams and individual superlatives are voted on by each league school's head coach and sports information director. Voting for oneself or one's own athletes is not permitted.
