Hawks Become Sixth Squad to Compete for 2022 Conference Title

FRISCO, Texas – The Southland Conference has added the University of Maryland Eastern Shore as a women’s golf affiliate member for the 2021-22 academic year, the league announced Wednesday.  The Hawks will join Southland members HBU, UIW and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, along with fellow affiliates Augusta (Ga.) University and Delaware State University.

“We are very pleased to have the Maryland Eastern Shore women’s golf program join the conference,” Southland Commissioner Tom Burnett said. “The Southland will offer an outstanding Division I championship experience to these student-athletes with the added opportunities for NCAA Championship access.”

Maryland Eastern Shore is a Division I program that has been competing independently.  The Shore is home to one of only 18 certified PGA Golf Management Programs in the United States and the only Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to hold this distinction.

"We are looking forward to this opportunity for our women's golf program to come in and have a chance to compete for a Southland Conference championship,” Hawks’ Athletics Director Keith Davidson said. “This relationship that we are building is a win for both the Southland Conference and Hawks women's golf."

“Maryland Eastern Shore is happy to join the Southland Conference,” head golf coach Billy Dillon added.  “This gives the women’s golf team an opportunity to participate in a conference championship with a chance to move on to the NCAA Regionals.  Joining the Southland Conference will also help in recruiting young ladies to our program that are looking forward to improving their golf game by playing in competitive collegiate tournaments.”

The 2022 Southland Women’s Golf Tournament will be held April 18-20, at a location to be determined.  The women’s tournament winner will also earn the Southland’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship.
