Islanders' Westbrook Named Women's Basketball Player of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Alecia Westbrook is the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Southland weekly honors are presented by GEICO.

Westbrook helped the Islanders improve to 7-0 at home averaging 14 points and 11.5 rebounds in a pair of non-conference wins over HBU and UIW. The Kansas City, Mo., native recorded her 10th consecutive game scoring in double figures, and she has pulled down at least eight rebounds in every game this 2021-22 season. The junior sits 14th in the nation and first in the Southland with 11.2 rebounds per game.

The award marks the second weekly honor of Westbrook’s season and career.  A&M-Corpus Christi will take on UIW in a non-conference match Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. in San Antonio before returning to Corpus Christi on Saturday, Jan. 15 to open conference play against the Cardinals at 1 p.m.

Westbrook led the Islanders in a pair of non-conference wins over HBU and UIW last week. The junior started off the week with a double-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds against the Huskies. She followed it up with 17 points and eight rebounds, while shooting 77 percent (7-for-9) from the field. Westbrook sits among top-50 nationally in rebounds per game (14th, 11.2), rebounds (21st, 145), free throws made (41st, 54) and double-doubles (43rd, 5).

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
