Islanders' Westbrook Grabs Third Weekly Honor of the Season

FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Alecia Westbrook is the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Southland weekly honors are presented by GEICO.

Westbrook guided the Islanders to a 2-0 week and has the program off to a 3-0 start in conference play for the first time since the 2009-10 season. The Kansas City, Mo., native recorded 34 points, 18 rebounds, four steals and shot 84.2 percent from the charity stripe in the two games. The junior forward sits 18th in the nation with 186 rebounds, 19th at 10.9 rebounds per game and 24th logging 76 free throws. A&M-Corpus Christi remains undefeated at home, recording 10 wins inside Dugan Wellness Center.

This award marks the third of Westbrook’s season and career. A&M-Corpus Christi begins its conference roadshow Thursday, Jan. 27 at Southeastern with a 5 p.m. tip, before closing out the week at Northwestern State on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m.

Westbrook started off the week shooting 92.9 percent from the free throw line (13-14), logging 23 points, nine rebounds, a pair of steals and an assist against McNeese Thursday. She followed it up going 3-for-5 (.600) from the free throw line, recording 17 points, nine rebounds and a pair of assists versus HBU Saturday. Westbrook sits atop the Southland charts pulling down 10.9 rebounds per game.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
