Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Payne and Barnes take Southland Volleyball Player of the Week awards
FRISCO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders went 3-0 last week with three Southland wins, leading to Kyndal Payne and Carissa Barnes earning Southland Conference Volleyball Players of the Week, with those award announced Monday by the conference office.
Offensive Player of the Week: Kyndal Payne, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – So. – Haslet, Texas (Eaton HS)
Payne led the Islanders in kills in all three wins last week with 59 total kills and a .314 hitting percentage. She set a program record and Southland season high with 28 kills in a five-set win against Northwestern State. She turned in double-double performances against both Northwestern State and A&M-Commerce, averaging 5.36 kills per set and 2.82 digs per set. Payne leads the conference in kills and points.
Defensive Player of the Week: Carissa Barnes, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – Sr. – Weatherford, Texas (Weatherford HS)
Barnes picked up 53 digs during the 3-0 week for the Islanders, averaging 4.82 digs per set. She averaged 7.0 digs per set in Tuesday’s sweep of Lamar and had 16 digs each in wins over Northwestern State and Texas A&M-Commerce. In conference play, Barnes averages 5.53 digs per set to rank second in the league and she ranks first in the conference in all matches at 5.01 digs per set. She is ranked fifth in the nation for total digs (325).
