SLC Champion Lamar battles in opening round of NCAA Tournament but falls to LSU, 3-1

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Lamar Cardinals displayed their typical offensive ability late in the match, but were unable to overcome an early deficit in a 3-1 loss to the eighth-seed LSU Tigers in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday evening.
 
With the loss, Lamar’s fantastic season ends with a 15-2-2 overall record. This was Lamar’s third trip to the NCAA Tournament.
 
Lamar’s Christine Kitaru scored on a breakaway goal in the 81st minute, running her season total to 13 goals.
 
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, LSU scored twice in a nine-minute span late in the first half, and tacked on another goal in the 64th minute.
 
Lamar goalkeeper Nicole Panis made 10 saves, as LSU’s sustained pressure allowed the Tigers to hold a 22-6 advantage in shots. Kitaru had two shots in the match, as did Laura Linares and Cariel Ellis. Kitaru had a penalty kick saved in the final minute of the match.
