FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Faith Panhans became a two-time winner of the Southland Conference Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Thursday alongside the Southland Academic All-Conference rosters.

Panhans carries a 4.00 grade point average while majoring in elementary education. The Plano, Texas, native was named the Southland Setter of the Year for the third consecutive year, becoming the third player in conference history to achieve that feat. She was an All-Southland First Team selection for the third year in a row and led the conference in assists per set at 10.57 in conference play. She ran the conference’s most efficient offense in terms of team hitting percentage at .272 and kills per set at 15.49, and was the only Southland setter to rank in the top 10 in the league in attack percentage at .360.

A&M-Corpus Christi led the way among the all-academic rosters with four selections, followed by three from HCU, two apiece from McNeese, Southeastern, and A&M-Commerce, and one from UIW.

Including Panhans, six student-athletes were named automatic selections to the all-academic squad after garnering first team all-conference honors. Panhans and teammate Carissa Barnes are three-time all-academic honorees.

The Southland Student-Athlete of the Year award is presented to the one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.

The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition in order to qualify for the all-academic squad.
