Southeastern Tops Southland Baseball Preseason Poll
FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern was selected as the preseason favorite in the Southland Conference Baseball Preseason Poll, the league announced Thursday. The preseason predicted order of finish is presented by
adidas.
After posting a 32-24 record and 22-17 mark in conference play to grab the No. 3 seed in the 2021 conference tournament, the Lions earned 10 first-place votes in the preseason poll. Southeastern returns 22 letterwinners, including a league-high eight preseason all-conference selections.
Among the honorees is defending Southland Freshman of the Year Brennan Stuprich, three other returning all-conference selections and a Southland Conference All-Tournament selection in Rhett Rosevear. However, skipper Matt Riser expects some competition from the 20 newcomers he’s bringing into the fold.
Two-time defending conference tournament champion McNeese occupies the second spot on the list with three first-place votes and 80 total points. The Cowboys garnered three spots on the all-league rosters, led by first-teamers Payton Harden and Tre Obregon III.
New Orleans is picked to finish third, followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Northwestern State, who combined to collect the remaining three first-place votes.
UIW comes in at No. 6, and the preseason poll is rounded out with a tie for seventh between HBU and Nicholls.
The season opens Friday, Feb. 18 with all eight teams in action, beginning with 1 p.m. first pitch between SIU-Edwardsville and Southeastern in Hammond, America.
Southland preseason polls are voted on by each program’s head coach and sports information director. Individuals rank the conference’s other seven teams in predicted order of regular season finish, with first-place votes worth seven points, second-place votes worth six points and so on to one point for seventh place.
