Cowgirls’ Vallejo, Lady Demons’ Roos Named Softball Players of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – McNeese’s Ashley Vallejo and Northwestern State’s Laney Roos are the Southland Conference Softball Players of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Southland weekly honors are presented by GEICO.

Roos had three multi-hit games, three extra-base hits and reached base in every game last week helping NSU to a 3-2 weekend at the Mardi Gras Mambo. Roos registered a .571 average at the plate, logging eight hits on 14 at bats, recording three runs with a home run, a pair of doubles and three RBIs last week. The Aubrey, Texas, native also recorded a .929 slugging percentage and a .647 on base percentage. This award marks the first of Roos’ career. The Lady Demons return to action tonight when the welcome Grambling to the Lady Demon Diamond at 5 p.m.

Earning her second weekly honor of the season, Vallejo was named Pitcher of the Week after another big weekend in the circle. The sophomore posted a 1-1 record against Memphis and Sam Houston. Vallejo logged 14 strikeouts, giving up two runs off six hits over 14 innings and closed out the weekend with a 0.64 era. The Cowgirls continue their homestand today hosting Louisiana Tech at 2 p.m.

Softball Hitter of the Week – Laney Roos, Northwestern State – So. – DP – Aubrey, Texas
Roos had a pair of doubles and drove in one of NSU’s two runs in the win against Lipscomb to start the weekend. She went 3-for-6 in two games on Saturday with two hits against Alabama and followed that with a 3-for-4 day against Portland State on Sunday. She hit a home run, drove in two and scored a run all three times in which she reached base.

Softball Pitcher of the Week – Ashley Vallejo, McNeese – So. – RHP – New Waverly, Texas
Vallejo only gave up two runs off six hits over the course of 14 innings against Sam Houston and Memphis. Vallejo earned a 0.64 ERA, logging 14 strikeouts, keeping her opponents to a .130 batting average. She was key in creating competitive games against the Bearkats who had one unearned run and the Cowgirl victory over the Tigers. Vallejo ranks 21st in the nation and first in the southland recording 21 shutouts thus far.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
