FRISCO, Texas – Nicholls’ Garrett Felix is the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and New Orleans starter Collin Horton earns Pitcher of the Week honors, the league announced Monday. Weekly awards are presented by GEICO.

Felix extended his impressive run of late, hitting .667 at the plate with five doubles, four RBI and three runs in four games for the Colonels last week. Owning a hit streak of seven-straight, the freshman infielder’s season average has rocketed to .448 through the opening weeks of his Division I career. Up next, Nicholls (9-8) visits Tulane at 6:30 p.m. CT Wednesday.

Despite narrowly missing out on the program’s first no-hitter in more than 20 years, Horton registered one of the finest pitching performances in program history with 16 strikeouts across 8.2 innings in a series-tying win over Youngstown State. The Privateers (10-4) host South Alabama at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before traveling to Oklahoma for a three-game series versus the Sooners set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Hitter of the Week – Garrett Felix, Nicholls – Freshman – Infielder – Lafayette, La.
Felix started the week off with back-to-back three-hit performances in a mid-week win over St. Thomas and the series opener against ULM, reaching base in each of his first eight plate appearances on the week. He helped fuel a comeback effort against the Warhawks with a two-run double in the sixth and knocked in two more runs in the second game of the weekend. Felix notched his fifth double of the week and drew a third walk in the series finale on Sunday.

Horton turned in a performance for the ages when he dominated Youngstown State to secure a split of the four-game series. He held the Penguins without a hit until there were two outs in the final frame and racked up 16 strikeouts, one shy of tying the program’s all-time single-game high. Horton struck out the side in four innings and tossed 124 pitches before passing the ball off to Jack Williams for the final out.

Honorable Mention: Will Kinzeler, Southeastern; Tyler Theriot, Nicholls; Isaiah Zavala, UIW.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
