Vanderbilt Claims Back-to-Back Southland Bowling Tournament Titles

HARAHAN, La. – After three days of competition, No. 2 Vanderbilt laid its claim to the 2022 Southland Bowling League Championship for the second consecutive year. The Commodores downed No. 4 Youngstown in match 14 of the tournament, behind a 964-946 traditional team and a 1,122-991 Baker total pinfall match. After capturing the title, the Commodores secured the Southland Bowling League’s automatic berth in the 2022 NCAA Bowling Championship.

The NCAA Women’s Bowling Committee will select a field of 16 teams for the NCAA championship - eight automatic qualifiers and eight at-large teams. The championship will be a double-elimination tournament, featuring 16 teams.

Selections for the 2022 NCAA Bowling Championship will be announced on Wednesday, March 30, via web stream at 3 p.m. on NCAA.com. The 2022 NCAA Regionals will be held in two weeks at four host sites (Arlington, Texas; Erie, Pa.; East Lansing, Mich.; and Rochester, N.Y. The 2022 NCAA championship will be hosted April 15-16 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in Columbus, Ohio.
 


Elimination Bracket – Fifth Round
 
No. 4 Youngstown vs No. 5 Louisiana Tech
Four-seeded Youngstown earned a trip to the championship match in a highly contested duel against Louisiana Tech that went the distance. The Techsters took a 906-900 traditional team match victory over the Penguins, leaning on Patricia Rosales’ 190 in the No. 3 spot.
 
Youngstown fought back in the Baker matchup with a trio of Penguins recording scores in the 200’s to secure a 1,008-975 win, tying the match at one set apiece and forcing a best-of-seven game.

Youngstown claimed the first two of the seven games in the final round, but once again Louisiana Tech fought back to force a deciding game seven. With a shot at the title on the line, the Penguins outmatched the Techsters 256-203, cementing their spot in the title match for the first time in program history.

Sunday’s championship match was decided in two as the Commodores clinched back-to-back tournament titles. Vanderbilt opened with a 964-946 win in the traditional matchup, led by Tournament Most Valuable Bowler, Mabel Cummins (212) and Samantha Gainor (202).

The Commodores remain perfect after an explosive 1,122-991 Baker total pinfall match to claim their second consecutive and fourth overall Southland Bowling League title.
