Championship Match Set at 2022 Southland Women’s Tennis Tournament

NEW ORLEANS – No. 2 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and No. 4 seed NJIT advanced to the Southland Conference Women’s Tennis Championship Match after securing victories over No. 3 New Orleans and No. 1 seed Northwestern State respectively in semifinal action Saturday morning at Privateers Tennis Center. The Islanders notched a 4-1 victory against the Privateers, while the Highlanders closed their second match of the tournament with a 4-3 upset over the Lady Demons. Sunday’s championship match is slated to begin at 10 a.m. CT at the Privateers Tennis Center.
 
No. 2 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4, No. 3 New Orleans 1
The Privateers opened the afternoon with the doubles point after winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. A&M-Corpus Christi responded securing the next four match points in singles. Camille Townsend started the Islanders scoring off with a 6-3,6-4 win on court two, followed by Victoire Delattire on court five with a straight set 7-6, 6-3 win. Emma Aucagne cemented the 4-1 victory for A&M-Corpus Christi on court one with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 tiebreaker.
 
No. 4 NJIT 4, No. 1 Northwestern State 3
NJIT punched its ticket to the Southland Championship finals following a 4-3 victory over top-seeded Northwestern State. The Lady Demons stepped on the gas early taking the double point with wins on courts one and two. NJIT’s Shalam Salvi fought back tying the match 1-1 with a straight set 6-2, 6-2 victory on court six.
 
The two teams traded points until Aya El Saleh tied a bow on the afternoon for NJIT with a singles win at No. 1 after a 6-4 result in set one and a 6-3 win in set three.
