Islanders Repeat As Southland Women’s Tennis Champions

NEW ORLEANS– For the second consecutive year, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program hoisted the Southland Conference Tournament trophy after defeating NJIT 4-1 in the finals on Sunday at the Privateers Tennis Center in New Orleans, La..The Islanders won the championship and their sixth consecutive match after pulling out the doubles point and four singles’ wins over fourth-seeded NJIT.

No. 2 doubles Leopoldine Boisseau and Kateryna Rublevska and No. 3 doubles Camille Townsend and Mariya Shumeika made quick work of the Highlanders, sealing a pair of 6-3 victories, to gain the doubles point for the Islanders.

In singles, Victoire Delattre recorded A&M-Corpus Christi’s first singles point of the day at the No. 5 position with a 6-3 and 6-0 performance. Rublevska showed up once again for the Islanders, this time with a straight-set 6-2, 6-3 singles’ win at No. 6. It was Shumeika’s singles match at No. 3 that proved to be the deciding factor as the junior stamped a 6-4 and 6-3 victory on court three. Shumeika was named Tournament MVP for her efforts.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has earned the Southland’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Islanders will learn their first-round opponent and site during the NCAA selection show, airing Monday, May 2 at 5:30 p.m. on the NCAA website.
