Privateers Secure Programs First Southland Men’s Tennis Tournament Title

NEW ORLEANS– New Orleans claimed its first Southland Men’s Tennis Tournament title after defeating top-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4-3 in the finals on Monday at the Privateers Tennis Center in New Orleans, La. UNO won the championship after a rain delay postponed the finish of singles action on Sunday.
 
No. 3 New Orleans 4, No. 1 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
No. 1 doubles Espen Lagarde and Akos Kotorman and No. 3 doubles Marcel Volz and Matthew Armbruster secured the doubles point for the Privateers with a pair of 6-4 wins.

In singles, Kotorman recorded New Orleans’ first singles point of the day at the No. 5 position with a 6-3 and 6-1 performance. The Islanders took the next three points of the match to take the lead 3-2. Facing a break down 4-2 in the third set, Armbruster never dropped another game as he won the third set 6-4 to tie the match at 3-3.

The deciding point came from Max Heinzel on court one, where he fought until the very end securing the winning point 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Heinzel was named Tournament MVP following his efforts.

New Orleans has earned the Southland’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Privateers will learn their first-round opponent and site during the NCAA selection show, airing Monday, May 2 at 5:30 p.m. on the NCAA website.
