Islanders’ Serrata Named Women’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year
FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Makinna Serrata is the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Thursday. In addition to her individual honor, Serrata was also named one of 10 student-athletes selected to the league’s academic all-conference rosters. Southland Student-Athlete of the Year awards are presented by
Whataburger.
Serrata capped off a monumental senior campaign for the Islanders, tying a bow on the season earning first team all-conference honors and a spot on the Southland All-Tournament team. She cemented herself as one of the team’s most efficient players, averaging 16.2 points per game, shooting 51.0 percent from the field and 90.5 percent from the free-throw line in conference play. Serrata was a key ingredient in A&M-Corpus Christi’s chemistry this season, pushing the team to a 19-10 overall record, 11-3 conference record and perfect 14-0 on their home court. Serrata closed out the season with a game-high 25 points in the Southland semifinals against Southeastern, including 13 of the team’s 17 points in the fourth quarter. While she has proven her aptitude on the floor, she has also excelled in the classroom as a kinesiology major. Serrata currently holds a 3.63 grade-point average.
Of the five schools represented on the Southland Academic All-Conference teams, regular-season Champion HBU led the way with five honorees. There were three automatic selections to the first-team roster, including Serrata, HBU’s Timia Jefferson and UIW’s Jaaucklyn Moore. Serrata, Jefferson and Southeastern’s Hailey Giaratano are the lone repeat selections and are making their second appearances on the Southland academic roster.
Student-Athlete of the Year is voted on by the Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the eight member universities. Southland Student-Athlete of the Year nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
Southland First Team All-Conference athletes who meet all-academic nomination criteria are automatically named First Team All-Academic selections.
