Privateers’ Volz, Islanders’ Aucagne Named Southland Tennis Student-Athletes of the Year
FRISCO, Texas – New Orleans’ Marcel Volz and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Emma Aucagne are the 2022 Southland Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Student-Athletes of the Year, respectively, the league announced Thursday with its all-academic teams.
Volz was named the Men’s Student Athlete of the Year following an outstanding junior year for New Orleans. The Iffezheim, Germany, native owns a 3.94 GPA in computer science and boasted a 12-7 mark in conference singles play en route to first-team all-conference honors and the Southland Player of the Year award. The junior led UNO to its first ever Southland regular-season title and Conference Tournament victory on court one.
Completing a sweep of the league’s Player and Student-Athlete of the Year awards, Aucagne sports a 3.95 GPA in criminal justice and is coming off a 15-5 (5-1 SLC) season in singles play. The sophomore won Player of the Week honors four times this season and moved into a leadership role, serving as a team captain for the 2022 season. The Saint-Fons, France, native won a pair of matches at the Southland Tournament to help the Islanders advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year.
New Orleans led the way with six selections, followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with five. NJIT and Nicholls garnered four of spots each, followed by UIW and Northwestern State with a pair and Southeastern rounded out the list with one honoree.
UIW’s Warren Fulgenzi, New Orleans’ Max Heinzel and A&M-Corpus Christi’s Pascal Lorieul repeat as selections on the men’s all-academic teams. Ank Vullings leads the women’s all-academic rosters as a three-time all-academic pick. Lady Lions’ Putri Insani and Islanders’ Camille Townsend received their second career all-academic nod.
The average GPA of the men’s honorees is 3.91, and 10 individuals boast a mark of 3.80 or higher, including three with a perfect 4.00. The average GPA of the women’s honorees is 3.91, five honorees earned a perfect 4.00 GPA with five individuals sitting at a 3.80 or higher mark.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coach, sports information director and an academic/compliance staff member from each institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA and have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to qualify for All-Academic selection.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the eight member schools, votes for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland Student-Athlete of the Year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
