Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to Face TCU in First Round of Beach Volleyball Championship

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Southland Conference Beach Volleyball Tournament champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is set for a first-round matchup with No. 2 seed TCU at 1 p.m. CT Wednesday in the first round of the 2022 National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala.
The Islanders make the league’s debut in the event after the field was expanded and additional automatic qualifiers were added. Wednesday features eight single-elimination matchups with the eight winners advancing to a double-elimination bracket set to begin Friday.
A&M-Corpus Christi (21-12) enters the tournament after sweeping its way through the Southland Beach Volleyball Tournament, culminating in a thrilling 3-2 victory over defending tournament champion and host HBU.
Four-time Southland Pair of the Week Giuliana Poletti Corrales and Brooke Pertuit were named the Pair of the Tournament after winning both of their finished matches, including a straight-set win over HBU’s top pair in the final. The duo enters as the highest ranked pair in the league at No. 46 with a 24-8 record.
The Islanders landed all five pairs on the all-conference teams, and head coach Gayle Stammer took home the Coach of the Year award following an 11-0 record against Southland opponents and a tournament championship.
TCU (38-3, 7-1 CCSA) earned an at-large bid to the field for the second-straight season after falling to No. 4 Florida State in the CCSA championship match. The Horned Frogs set program records for most ranked victories (21) and most overall wins (38) in a season.
The winner between the Islanders and Horned Frogs will face the winner of Grand Canyon and Georgia State.
