FRISCO, Texas – After a record-breaking 2022 season, UIW quarterback Lindsey Scott, Jr., was announced as the winner of the Walter Payton Award as the FCS outstanding offensive player at the annual FCS awards banquet.
 
Scott had a record-breaking season while leading the Cardinals to their deepest playoff run in school history, all the way to the FCS national semifinals. He completed 322-of-454 passes for 4,686 yards with 60 touchdowns against only eight interceptions with a passer efficiency rating of 197.71. He also had 132 carries for 696 yards and 11 touchdowns in the 2022 campaign.
 
Scott is unanimous All-America selection, earning first team honors from the Associated Press, AFCA, Athlon Sports, Phil Steele, Stats Perform, FCS ADA, Hero Sports, and Bluebloods. He has also been named the FCS Offensive Player of the Year by FCS ADA.
  
In the 2022 season, he set the FCS single-season records for passing touchdowns (60), touchdown responsibility (71), point responsibility (432), and percentage of passes thrown for touchdowns (13.2%). He tied the FCS record for passing touchdowns in a half (7), and did so twice (vs. HCU, vs. Lamar). He tied the single-season record for consecutive games passing for over 200 yards (13).
 
He is the fourth Southland player to win the Walter Payton Award and his accomplishment marks the fifth Payton trophy taken home by the SLC.

For his career in two seasons at Nicholls and this season at UIW, Scott completed 615-of-939 passes for 8,453 yards with 94 touchdowns and 26 interceptions, while also rushing 367 times for 2,243 yards and 26 touchdowns. He is the 24th quarterback in FCS history to throw for over 4,000 yards and rush for over 2,000 yards in a career, with total offense of 10,696 yards and 120 touchdowns in three seasons.
 
The Walter Payton Award, first presented in 1987, has a distinguished history of recipients, including Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook, Jimmy Garoppolo, Cooper Kupp and Trey Lance.
