FRISCO, Texas – UIW's Richard Torres and Southeastern's Victor Tademy and Tristan Goodly are the winners of the Southland Conference’s football weekly awards for the eighth week of the season, as announced by the conference office Monday.
Offensive Player of the Week: Richard Torres, UIW – QB – Fr. – San Antonio, Texas (Southside HS)
Quarterback Richard Torres came up big in relief for No. 5 UIW as he led a ferocious comeback over the McNeese Cowboys, accouting for four touchdowns in a 35-24 come-from-behind win. Torres came into the game in the second half for the Cardinals down 24-7, and led the offense to 28 unanswered points, throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for one more. Torres finished 11-for-18 and 161 yards in the second half.
Defensive Player of the Week: Victor Tademy – DB – Sr. – Arkadelphia, Ark. (Arkadelphia HS)
Defensive back Victor Tademy came up huge for the Southeastern Lions as a big-play night led the Lions to their first win over Northwestern State. Tademy led Southeastern with 10 tackles, but made a big impact play to start the second half. Leading 21-17 and coming out of the break, Tademy stepped in front of a Tyler Vander Waal pass and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown. It began a dominant second half by the SLU defense, outscoring Northwestern State 16-3.
Honorable Mention: Quinton Sharkey, Nicholls
Special Teams Player of the Week: Tristan Goodly – WR – Fr. – Westlake, La. (Westlake HS)
Making his debut at kick returner, Tristan Goodly made a huge impact on the special teams front. Down 17-14 in the second quarter, Goodly took the kickoff and found a seam, breaking free for a 48-yard kickoff return that set up SLU to take a lead that the Lions would never relinquish in a 37-20 victory at Northwestern State.
