FRISCO, Texas – Based on the decision by Northwestern State University to cancel the remainder of its 2023 Football season, the Southland Conference announced updated standings procedures for the rest of the 2023 season.
The following standings procedures will apply:
- Northwestern State’s conference games played against Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana will stand as wins.
- The previously cancelled games against Nicholls and McNeese and the remaining games against HCU, UIW and Texas A&M-Commerce will be declared as a no contest per NCAA rules.
- The contests against Nicholls, McNeese, HCU, UIW and Texas A&M-Commerce will count as wins for conference standing purposes only.
- After the scheduled game dates, the “wins” will be added to the conference standings only. They will not be reflected in the overall records per NCAA policy. Since the Nicholls contest date has passed, it will be updated in the conference standings immediately.
- The Commissioner Cup standings points will utilize the above-mentioned conference standings procedure.
For 2023 NCAA Postseason considerations:
- The NCAA does not recognize forfeits unless game/match officials render such a decision once event begins and is under officials’ control.
- The NCAA will not reflect “no contests” per its statistics policies.
- The FCS Selection Committee will not take forfeited contests into consideration when evaluating teams for possible postseason inclusion.
