UIW repeats as Southland Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Champions

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -  The UIW Cardinals scored 143.5 points to win their second consecutive 2023 Southland Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship on Monday afternoon.
 
The Cardinals won in dominant fashion, 39.5 points ahead of runners-up Northwestern State for the largest margin of victory at the SLC indoor meet since 2012.

MOST VALUABLE PERFORMER
Isaiah Hudgens of UIW collected 26 points for the Cardinals with wins in the heptathlon (5,620 points) and pole vault (4.85 meters, 15’ 11”) and a bronze medal in the 60 meter hurdles (8.06 second)
 
INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONS
Other individual champions included A&M-Commerce’s J.T. Smith in the 60 meter dash (6.65 seconds), HCU’s Garrett Gibson in the 60 meter Hurdles (7.97 seconds), A&M-Commerce’s Delan Edwin in the 200 meter dash (21.04 seconds), Southeastern’s Eugene Omalla in the 400 meter dash (46.79 seconds), Southeastern’s Noah Kiprotich in the 800 meter run (1:53.47), HCU’s Alex Piqualt in the 1 mile run (4:23.47), A&M-Corpus Christi’s Dennis Kipngeno in the 3000 meter run (8:21.23) and the 5000 meter run (14:23.40), Southeastern’s Slavko Stevic in the high jump (2.21 meters) in a repeat championship, Lamar’s Kenson Tate in the long jump (7.53 meters), Northwestern State’s Andrew Gilbreath in the triple jump (15.26 meters), Northwestern State’s Djimon Gumbs in the shot put (18.95 meters), and UIW’s Garrett Stokes in the weight throw (18.62 meters).
 
Southeastern won the 4x400 meter relay at 3:12.06 and A&M-Corpus Christi won the distance medley relay at 9:54.71.
 
Kipngeno’s 3K-5K double marks the third consecutive season that both distance events were won by the same student-athlete.
