Weir of New Orleans, Maury of A&M-Commerce take home Southland Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week acclaim
FRISCO, Texas – Alexandra Weir of New Orleans and Maia Maury of Texas A&M-Commerce are the winners of the Southland Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards for the fourth week of the 2023 season, as announced Wednesday by the conference office.
Women's Track Athlete of the Week: Alexandra Weir, New Orleans - Jr. - Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Northern Secondary School)
Weir set a new school record for the women's 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:28.80 - seven seconds faster than the old mark set in 2001. Weir finished in 6th place out of 45 runners at the Boston University Scarlet and White Invitational, and her time was 21 seconds faster than her previous personal best. This is the fastest 3,000-meter time among Southland student-athletes this season, and currently ranks seventh in the South Central Region.
Women's Field Athlete of the Week: Maia Maury, Texas A&M-Commerce - So. - Noisy-Le-Grand, France
Maury won the pentathlon at the Washburn Open last weekend. Her score of 3,497 is second in the Southland this season and she won the meet by racing to the fastest time of 2:21.83 in the 800 meter run, which is the 11th fastest time in the conference this season.
