FRISCO, Texas - Brandelyn Fulgenzi of UIW was named the 2023 Southland Conference Women's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Year, as the annual All-Academic Team was announced Thursday.
Fulgenzi claims the double award honor of both Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year, carrying a 3.57 grade point average in sports management. Along with her Player of the Year honors, she earned First Team All-Conference at No. 1 singles as well as No. 1 doubles with teammate Estefania Gonzalez. Fulgenzi went 6-1 in conference play at No. 1 singles with a conference-best 15-2 overall mark at No. 1 singles. Fulgenzi and Gonzalez were a perfect 7-0 at No. 1 doubles in conference action and were also undefeated in the regular season. She was an ITA Texas Region Doubles Champion in the fall and remained in the ITA doubles rankings all season.
Conference champion A&M-Corpus Christi and UIW shared the conference lead with three all-academic selections each, while Southeastern had two picks and McNeese, NJIT, Nicholls, and Northwestern State each had one selection.
The all-academic teams are voted on by a head coach, sports information director and an academic/compliance staff member from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA and completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to qualify for All-Academic selection. Student-Athlete of the Year nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
