HAMMOND — Chris Olivier walked to the mound out of the bullpen with one out in the first inning under dire circumstances with his team already trailing 3-0 to No. 7 A&M-Corpus Christi. But the sophomore showed his mettle, stabilizing the Privateers' defense and leading No. 3 New Orleans to a 7-4 comeback win over the Islanders Wednesday at the Southland Baseball Championship.
Olivier's final line totaled 8.2 innings with one earned run on four hits and four strikeouts. He also retired 18 of his final 19 batters including a stretch of 18 straight lasting from the fourth inning until the final out.
Maddox Thornton and Jack Hill combined for the longest stretch of action for A&M-Corpus Christi. Thornton ended with one earned run on five hits in four innings while Hill fanned five batters with one earned run off three hits in three innings.
The Privateers had 14 hits to only five from the Islanders but A&M-Corpus Christi controlled the majority of the contest stranding 11 of runners on base.
Maika Niu led UNO with three hits and two runs in the game while Issac Williams went three-of-five with two RBI. Miguel Useche, Bryce Calloway and Mitchell Sanford each ended with two hits.
Chance Reisdorph led the Islanders with a two-of-four appearance at the plate with two RBI.
A&M-Corpus Christi forced UNO starter Colton Mercer out in less than an inning after a surge at the dish in the first inning. Reisdorph fueled that start with an RBI triple that scored the first two runs. Christian Smith Johnson smacked a single to the left side and Reisdorph scored, giving the Islanders a 3-0 lead.
First-team all-conference catcher Miguel Useche put the Privateers on the board in the proceeding frame with an RBI double. But a bases-loaded walk brought in a countering run in the bottom of the third.
Issac Williams singled to bring in another UNO run in the fourth, but with several runners on the base paths the three seed only brought in one run.
Williams came through again for UNO with an RBI single in the eighth that tied the game after fielder's choice play brought them within one run. Dylan Mach would score on a fly out on the following at bat and the Privateers took the lead for good.
Sanford singled to left to extend the lead to a 6-4 margin and Niu would tag from third in the ninth, putting UNO out of trouble through the final inning.
The Privateers await the loser of Thursday night's matchup between No. 6 Southeastern and No. 2 Nicholls for another elimination contest on Friday. The Islanders are eliminated from postseason play.
