FRISCO, Texas — UTRGV's Linnea Eld, Lamar's Arely Alaniz and Northwestern State's Libe Banuelos have won this week's Jersey Mike's Southland Women’s Soccer Player of the Week awards, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Offensive Player of the Week: Linnea Eld, UTRGV – So. – Kungsbacka, Sweden (Onsala BK)
Eld scored her first goal of the season last week, delivering the game-winner for the Vaqueros in a 1-0 win over Southern last week, the first for UTRGV as a member of the Southland Conference. That strike marked her third career goal. She leads the team with 14 shots and six shots on goal through four games.
Defensive Player of the Week: Arely Alaniz, Lamar – Gr. – Deer Park, Texas (Deer Park High School)
Alaniz tallied a goal and an assist on five shots in the two games last week for the Cardinals. She scored the first goal against Rice University off of a free kick. Against Sam Houston, she assisted on what would be the game-winning goal for Lamar in its 2-1 victory over the Bearkats.
Goalkeeper of the Week: Libe Banuelos, Northwestern State – Sr. – Deusto, Basque (Botikazar)
Banuelos surrendered just one goal in two games, recording her first shutout of the season against Abilene Christian. She made six saves on the week and ranks among the top goalkeepers in the Southland in total saves this season.
