No. 2 Southeastern Stops No. 3 Nicholls' Surge, Punches Ticket to Southland Softball Championship Series

HAMMOND, La. – No. 2 Southeastern watched as No. 3 Nicholls put away No. 6 SFA earlier in the day, then grinded out their own victory against the Colonels, holding on to advance out of the Hammond Bracket and into the Southland Softball Championship Series. This will be the fourth straight season the Lions play in the conference's championship event.

Game 1 — (3) Nicholls 11, (6) SFA 1 (5)
The Lumberjacks had an early spark but the Colonels' first-inning fireworks put them in control and they would not look back. Mikaelah Burkland sent a solo homerun over the left field wall, giving SFA a 1-0 lead. Nicholls responded with six runs in the bottom half of the frame, fueled by two RBI singles courtesy of Molly VandenBout and Ally Mooneyham.

The Colonels capitalized on one of SFA's four fielding errors to extend their lead to an 8-1 margin in the second. Carmella Muccilli and Claire Sisco would help bring in the final runs of the game in the fourth before Nicholls' defense, led by VandenBout in circle, put the game away after five innings.

Game 2 — (2) Southeastern 4, (3) Nicholls 3
Nicholls put runners on the bases early, mounting pressure on the Lions' defense in the second inning. Laylin Sturm broke open the scoring with an RBI single that brought in a run and kept the bases loaded. Claire Sisco was hit by a pitch on the next at bat, advancing all runners to make the score 2-0.

Southeastern would get their answer in the third innning. Kailey Dixon batted in the Lions' first run with a single to cut the deficit to 2-1. Maria Detillier then reached on a fielder's choice that would end up scoring two more, giving Southeastern a 3-2 lead. She came through again in the fifth, batting in the fourth Southeastern run after a single to left.

Nicholls threatened with two outs in the seventh, making it 4-3 after Molly VandenBout doubled to the left field wall. But the Lions would get their final out on the next at bat.
