FRISCO – The 2026 Air Force Reserve Southland Basketball Championships presented by Louisiana Office of Tourism tipped off March 8–12 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, as the Southland Conference once again delivered one of the region’s premier sporting events while serving as a meaningful driver of economic impact for the Lake Charles and Southwest Louisiana region.
Over five days, the championship welcomed teams, fans, families, alumni, and media from across the Conference footprint, generating significant activity throughout Lake Charles and the Southwest Louisiana region for local hotels, restaurants, retail businesses, and hospitality partners. Now in its fourth year in the Lake Charles market, the Southland Basketball Championships has produced nearly $15 million in total economic impact, averaging more than $3.5 million annually for the region.
“The Southland Basketball Championships have become far more than a postseason event for our Conference," said Southland Conference Commissioner Chris Grant. "This championship has quickly become a premier event and a crown jewel of the Southland Conference, elevating Lake Charles and the Southwest Louisiana region while amplifying our brand across ESPN platforms and digital channels. The continued growth we’re seeing, in attendance, national viewership, and digital engagement, is a direct reflection of the commitment from our member institutions, corporate partners, and the Lake Charles community to deliver a first-class experience for our student-athletes and fans,”
That national visibility continued to grow in 2026. The Southland’s men’s semifinal on ESPNU drew 21,861 viewers, a 27 percent increase year over year, while the men’s championship game on ESPN2 delivered 288,230 viewers, up 31 percent from last season. Combined, the Conference’s two men’s linear telecasts averaged 159,342 viewers, a 29 percent increase over 2024-25, reinforcing the championship’s upward trajectory on ESPN platforms.
The momentum extended inside the arena as well, as the men’s championship game sold out at 5,272 fans, setting a new attendance record for a basketball game at the Legacy Center and further highlighting the championship’s growth within Lake Charles and the Southwest Louisiana region.
Beyond television, the championship also generated significant growth across the Southland’s digital and social platforms. The Conference produced 6.7 million total views, a 96.7 percent increase from 2025, along with 247,817 total engagements, up 149.5 percent year over year. Instagram led the way with 4.2 million views and 172,825 engagements, while Facebook contributed 1.94 million views and X added more than 600,000 views. The growth reflects a continued emphasis on consistent storytelling, expanded content output, and delivering meaningful, real-time coverage throughout the championship.
All 12 games were televised nationally on ESPN linear and digital platforms, providing valuable exposure for Lake Charles and positioning the Southwest Louisiana region as a premier destination for championship events, tourism, and major sporting experiences.
The Southland’s continued success in Lake Charles and the Southwest Louisiana region would not be possible without the support of key state and local partners who help create a first-class environment for student-athletes and fans while strengthening the region’s economic vitality. Those partners include Navarre Auto Group, Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, Coushatta Casino Resort, Louisiana Propane, ExxonMobil, and Louisiana Tourism.
Corporate partnerships are secured through Van Wagner, which manages the Southland Conference’s corporate marketing and sponsorship program.
