HAMMOND, La. – No. 4 UIW fought off elimination while No. 5 Lamar and No. 1 Southeastern had their matchup postponed following a schedule shakeup at the Southland Softball Championship Hammond Bracket. Yet, three teams still remain heading into the weekend.
Game 3 — (4) UIW 9, (8) A&M-Corpus Christi 0
Victoria Altamirano had a quiet start to the postseason in UIW's loss to Lamar Thursday. Friday, the Southland Player and Hitter of the Year would not be denied. After Prisas Quintero got the Cardinals going with an RBI single, Altamirano eventually found herself at the dish with the bases loaded in the second. The senior blasted a grand slam over the wall in center, giving UIW a significant boost.
The Cardinals would continue adding to their lead, eventually making it a 9-0 ballgame after Quintero's second RBI single. Jenny Robledo shut down the Islanders' attack, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing only two hits.
Game 4 — (5) Lamar at (1) Southeastern - PPD
The winners matchup in Hammond saw a postponement to Saturday following a rain out Friday afternoon. The game has been rescheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday with the loser tasked with a quick turnaround against No. 5 UIW.
