FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Isaac Mushila is the Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced Thursday in conjunction with the All-Academic First and Second Teams.
An All-Conference First-Team honoree, Mushila led the league and ranked top-25 in the country in rebounding with 9.9 per outing. He nearly averaged a double-double as he scored 14.5 points per game. Mushila broke the school record for double-doubles in a season with 14. He led the team in field goal percentage with a .375 and also shot .835 from the free throw line. He helped push the Islanders to their first-ever NCAA Tournament win while also carrying a 3.43 grade point average and majoring in psychology.
UIW had three All-Academic selections on the first and second teams, while A&M-Corpus Christi and Southeastern each had two picks.
Southland Conference All-Academic Teams are voted upon by the head coach, sports information director and an academic/compliance staff member from each school. Voting for one’s own athletes is not permitted.
To be eligible for all-academic distinction, an athlete must hold a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average through the semester prior to the sport’s championship, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating school prior to the current season, and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competitions during the most recently completed season. Student-Athlete of the Year nominees must have held at least a 3.20 GPA and have completed at least two years of athletic competition at the nominating school, including the current season.
First Team All-Conference athletes who meet all-academic nomination criteria are automatically named all-academic.
