FRISCO, Texas — SFA's Maddie Bowers, UTRGV's Abbie Bailey and Northwestern State's Kora Fry have won this week's Jersey Mike's Southland Women’s Soccer Player of the Week awards, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Offensive Player of the Week: Maddie Bowers, SFA – Gr. – F – Lake Jackson, Texas (Brazoswood High School)
Maddie Bowers recorded her seventh and eighth career goals in back-to-back games last week against TAMU-San Antonio and Oral Roberts. Bowers assisted on three goals this week and recorded seven points. In 108 minutes of action, Bowers recorded three shots per game, 1.5 assists per game, one goal per game and 3.5 points per game.
Defensive Player of the Week: Abbie Bailey, UTRGV – Sr. – D – Redditch, England (Arrowvale)
Bailey anchored a UTRGV defense that recorded back-to-back shutouts last week, stretching their streak to three-straight scoreless matches. In total, UTRGV allowed just 2 shots last week and 0 on goal. Bailey also scored her first goal of the season, converting a penalty kick in the win over Howard Payne. She has also played a full 90 minutes in every match this season.
Goalkeeper of the Week: Kora Fry, Northwestern State – R Jr. – GK – East Wenatchee, Wash. (Eastmount High School)
Filling in for Libe Banuelos, Kora posted a solo shutout in her first career start, a 2-0 win at Alabama A&M. Kora stopped four shots, including a few in one-on-one situations. She also played the final 53 minutes against Jackson State, finishing off a combined shutout, once again making three saves to keep a Tigers team off the board for the first time this season.
