FRISCO, Texas — Northwestern State's Vernell Atamah has earned Jersey Mike's Southland Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week award, the conference office announced Monday.

Atamah averaged 25 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, including recording a double-double with 29 points and 11 rebounds in the victory over New Orleans on Thursday. She followed that up with the leading scorer against league-leading Southeastern, pouring in 21 points. In both of the games, she shot at least 50 percent from the field and blocked a shot in each game, as well as recording three steals vs. New Orleans. She almost led the Demons to a big comeback against the Lions on Saturday, scoring eight straight points in the fourth quarter to cut a 12-point deficit down to 52-48 midway through the fourth quarter.
