NATCHITOCHES — The 2025 Southland Individual Tennis Championships continued Thursday with action at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex in Natchitoches, La. Due to forecasted inclimate weather, the Women's Doubles Championship saw a change in schedule with both quarterfinals and semifinals matches being contested on the day.
SFA's team of Ksenia Mamontova and Jemma Cave beat Northwestern State's Maria Farina and Honoka Umeda 6-4, 6-2 and would go onto face No. 4 McNeese's Leana Gomez and Erica Hagi after they escaped Arina Gudovskaya and Luana Paiva 7-5, 1-6, 10-4. The No. 1-seeded Lumberjacks then claimed the semifinal contest 6-3, 6-1. No. 2 Yana Mykytyn and Kseniya Ramanouskaya of A&M-Corpus Christi rallied to beat Rhea Makesar and Mariia Bakhtina 2-6, 6-0, 10-4 on the opposite side of the bracket before Southeastern's Bente Bierma and Paige Duncan sprung the upset on No. 3 Lamar 7-6, 6-7, 10-7. Mykytyn and Ramanouskaya then took down the Lions' pair 6-2, 6-0.
Mamontova/Cave will face Mykytyn/Ramanouskaya Friday at 11 a.m. in the championship match.
Women's singles saw reigning Southland Player of the Year and No. 1 Salome Fluri of McNeese defeat Northwestern State's Zoi Spyrou 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. She meets UTRGV's Yaiza Vazquez in the semifinals after knocking off No. 4 seed Josefa Fuenzalida of A&M-Corpus Christi 7-6, 6-1. No. 2 Estefania Gonzalez of UIW defeated Southeastern's Fresh Suanarsa 6-1, 6-3 and No. 2 Felicia Back from SFA notched a 6-4, 6-2 win over Lamar's Arina Gudovskaya 6-4, 6-2.
Friday's semifinals pits Fluri against Vazquez and Gonzalez versus Back in matches set to begin at 9 a.m. The championship match will follow at 3 p.m.
UTRGV stole the spotlight in the initial Men's Singles and Doubles matches. The Vaqueros' No. 4-seeded team of Will Roberts and Paolo Bonaguro handled Nicholls' Felipe Spagnuolo and Arthur Oliani 6-0, 6-2. Santiago Serrano followed that peformance with an upset in the singles bracket, beating No. 4 Colin Tavares of Nicholls 6-3, 6-3.
Men's Doubles continues Friday at 9 a.m. while the Singles get started at 1 p.m.
