Southland Football Round Up (Oct. 4, 2025) – SFA, Southeastern Roll on the Road; Lamar, UTRGV, East Texas A&M Add Conference Wins

FRISCO –Southeastern and Stephen F. Austin each moved to 2-0 in conference play with dominant road wins, while Lamar, East Texas A&M, and UTRGV also notched league victories. Here’s the Week 6 Rundown.

RV/RV SFA 31, No. RV/20 UIW 17
Stephen F. Austin delivered a full-on attack Saturday night inside Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium, dominating from the start of its Southland Conference showdown with No. 20/RV Incarnate Word to earn a fourth straight victory and improve to 2-0 in league play with a 31-17 win in the Alamo City. Quarterback Sam Vidlak was highly efficient, completing 19-of-26 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns. The SFA defense recorded six sacks for the second straight game, led by Victor Idusuyi II, who posted a career-high 2.5 sacks, including a crucial fourth-down chase-down of Colson midway through the fourth quarter. Jaydon Southard notched his fourth game this season with double-digit tackles, matching his career best with 16 stops (12 solo) while adding three tackles for loss (19 yards), 1.5 sacks (17 yards), and a forced fumble.

RV Southeastern 38, McNeese 0
Southeastern Louisiana jumped out to a 38-0 halftime lead and never looked back in a dominant Southland Conference road win over McNeese on Saturday night at Cowboy Stadium.
Southeastern (4-2, 2-0 SLC) outgained the Cowboys 418–189 and remained unbeaten versus FCS competition. The Lions took a 26–25 lead in the all-time series with their sixth consecutive victory over McNeese, marking the Cowboys’ first home shutout since former league member Central Arkansas won 35–0 in 2016. KK Reno led SLU with 11 tackles, while Joshua Randall and Peyton Anderson each added a sack. Ian Conerly-Goodly returned an interception for a touchdown, and Khamron Ford added his second interception of the season. The Lion defense limited McNeese to just 10 first downs and 37 passing yards.

No. 25/20 Lamar 24, Nicholls 17
Lamar opened the game with an 85-yard touchdown pass and sealed it with an 88-yard punt return to defeat Nicholls 24–17 on Saturday afternoon at Provost Umphrey Stadium. The victory — Big Red’s fourth straight — moves Lamar to 4–1 overall and 1–0 in Southland play. Lamar totaled 337 yards of offense, narrowly behind Nicholls’ 348. Sophomore quarterback Aiden McCown improved to 3–0 as a starter, completing 12-of-22 passes for 237 yards and a touchdown. After the Lamar defense forced a late stop, Nicholls was forced to punt with less than four minutes remaining. Kyndon Fuselier fielded the 50-yard punt at his own 12-yard line, broke two tackles, and returned it 88 yards for the go-ahead touchdown — just two yards shy of the longest in program history and marking the second straight year he’s returned a punt for a score against Nicholls.

UTRGV 27, HCU 7
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley football team earned its first-ever Southland Conference home win, defeating Houston Christian 27–7 on Saturday before a sellout crowd of 12,903 at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium. At 5–1, the Vaqueros are off to one of the best six-game starts by a first-year Division I FCS program since 2008, matching Kennesaw State’s 5–1 mark in 2015 and trailing only South Alabama’s 6–0 start in 2009 (which came against non-Division I opponents). Sharyland Pioneer alum Eddie Lee Marburger led the Vaqueros (5–1, 1–1 SLC) with a career-high two rushing touchdowns and 80 rushing yards on 13 carries. He also threw for 131 yards on 11-of-22 passing. Defensively, UTRGV recorded six sacks. Freshman Jaiden Haygood tallied 11 tackles (three solo) and a pass breakup, while junior Ian Box added a career-best 1.5 sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss among his four stops.

East Texas A&M 40, Northwestern State 10
East Texas A&M rolled to its first win of the 2025 season with a dominant 40–10 victory over Northwestern State on Saturday night at Turpin Stadium, outgaining the Demons 532–190. The 10 points allowed were the fewest since 2023, and the 30-point margin of victory was the second largest of the program’s Division I era. KJ Shankle led the rushing attack with 93 yards, while EJ Oakmon added 75 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Ron Peace completed 14-of-19 passes for 268 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Devin Matthews paced the receivers with 109 yards on four catches, while Christian Jourdain added 64 yards on four receptions. On defense, Kyree Anderson recorded seven tackles (3.5 for loss), a sack, and a forced fumble. Lavon Williams also notched seven tackles, and CJ Garnett added an interception.
