FRISCO – Southeastern Louisiana and Stephen F. Austin opened their home slates in dominant fashion on Saturday, while UTRGV delivered another raucous performance in front of a sellout crowd and Lamar took care of business on the road. Here’s the Week 3 Rundown.
RV/RV Southeastern 56, Mississippi Valley State 3
The Southeastern Louisiana University football team scored touchdowns on its first four possessions and never looked back in a 56-3 win over Mississippi Valley State in Saturday night's home opener at Strawberry Stadium. SLU led 42-3 at halftime and was able to go deep into its bench on the way to the victory. The Lions had standout performances in every phase. Carson Camp (8-for-12, 147 yards, 2 TD) and Kyle Lowe (8-for-8, 155 yards, 3 TD) split time under center to lead a Southeastern offense that racked up 445 total yards. Jaylon Domingeaux paced the receivers with four catches for 82 yards and three touchdowns – the first Lion with three TD receptions in a game since career leader Austin Mitchell accomplished the feat in a 49-30 win over UIW on Oct. 7, 2017. Defensively, SLU tallied 12 tackles for loss and three sacks. Blayne Delahoussaye intercepted a pass, while Evan Aubrey forced a fumble that was recovered by KK Reno. Reno and Jirrea Johnson Jr. shared team-high honors with six tackles each.
No. 24/RV Lamar 31, Texas Southern 7
Lamar University produced three key special teams plays – two blocked punts returned for touchdowns and a blocked field goal – to build a 21-point first-half lead and cruise to a 31-7 victory over Texas Southern on Saturday night at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston. Sophomore quarterback Aidan McCown made his first career start and completed 12-of-22 passes for 81 yards. He also rushed seven times for 50 yards (7.1 average) and a touchdown. The Cardinals finished with 333 total yards, including 252 on the ground. Freshman LaDamian McDowell led the rushing attack with 11 carries for 92 yards (8.4 average), while Damian Moore added a rushing score. Eight different Cardinals recorded a carry. Defensively, senior Kristian Pugh and Royce Maloles led the way with five tackles apiece. Maloles added two tackles for loss as Lamar held TSU to 196 yards of offense and just seven points.
RV/RV SFA 63, Sul Ross State 0
Stephen F. Austin scored 56 first-half points, forcing eight-minute quarters in the second half, as the ’Jacks routed former Lone Star Conference rival Sul Ross State 63-0 in Saturday night’s home opener before 3,100 fans at Homer Bryce Stadium. The onslaught began quickly with three first-quarter touchdowns, including Sam Vidlak passes to Richard Reese (64 yards) and Kylon Harris (32 yards) after a 10-yard Jerrell Wimbley run capped a six-play, 68-yard drive to open the scoring.
UTRGV 80, Langston 0
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley won its third straight game in dominant fashion, defeating Langston 80-0 before a sellout crowd of 12,552 at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium. Senior quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger, a Sharyland Pioneer alum, played most of the first half and went 12-for-19 for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Xayvion Noland caught two of those scores and finished with 151 yards on five receptions. Redshirt freshman Brennan Carroll rushed for 134 yards on seven carries, including a 75-yard run. Fellow redshirt freshmen Jaiden Haygood and Jackson Waid shared team-high honors with five tackles each.
Weber State 42, McNeese 41
Weber State’s Matt Herron batted down Jake Strong’s potential game-winning two-point conversion pass in the final seconds, allowing the Wildcats to escape with a 42-41 victory over McNeese on Saturday night at Navarre Stadium. The Cowboys (1-2) trailed 42-21 after BJ Carey returned a tipped Strong pass 42 yards for a touchdown with 9:45 remaining. McNeese outgained Weber State 537-447 in total offense, including a 334-174 advantage in the second half. Strong completed 20-of-39 passes for 278 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Jonathan Harris posted career highs with seven receptions for 114 yards, while Tre’Vonte Citizen and Bryce Strong combined for 213 rushing yards and two scores.
UTSA 48, No. 14/8 UIW 20
Incarnate Word fell to UTSA 48-20 on Saturday at the Alamodome, dropping to 1-2 on the season. EJ Colson entered in the second half and passed for 213 yards and three touchdowns while completing 71 percent of his attempts. Chedon James led all receivers with 134 yards and three touchdowns. Declan Williams tallied 14 tackles, just one shy of the school’s single-game top five.
Nebraska 59, HCU 7
HCU redshirt freshman Xai’Shaun Edwards rushed for 82 yards, including an 82-yard touchdown run, but the Huskies fell 59-7 to Big Ten member Nebraska on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Edwards’ score was his fifth rushing touchdown of the season. Darryle Evans added 39 yards on 14 carries. Cameron Weir completed 11-of-18 passes for 67 yards, while Ja’Ryan Wallace led the receivers with 31 yards on five catches. Xavier Toliver paced the defense with seven tackles, while Jayven Anderson, Rodney Dansby and Norey Johnson added five each. Dansby also broke up a pass.
Cincinnati 70, Northwestern State 0
For the second straight week, Northwestern State fell to a Power Five opponent, this time dropping a 70-0 decision at Cincinnati’s Nippert Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats scored five first-quarter touchdowns and never looked back.
