SAN MARCOS, Texas — Houston Christian maintained its lead, but the race tightened Tuesday as several standout individual performances highlighted the second round of the 2026 Southland Conference Women’s Golf Championship at Kissing Tree Golf Club.
The Huskies posted a 7-over 295 and sit at 3-over 579 through 36 holes, holding a slim one-shot advantage over UTRGV, which climbed into second after an even-par 288 — the best team round of the day. Incarnate Word remains in contention in third at 13-over 589.
Individually, Houston Christian’s Sara Pihlajamaki continues to lead the field at 3-under 141 after a steady even-par 72, while teammate Alyssa Stewart and UTRGV’s Miriam Barcalova are tied for second at 2-under 142.
The round’s biggest charge came from Incarnate Word’s Isabella Saenz, who fired a tournament-best 4-under 68. Saenz carded six birdies, including five on the front nine and four consecutive from holes 2 through 5, vaulting into a tie for fifth overall.
Lamar’s Brooke Frerichs also made a move with a 2-under 70, highlighted by five birdies and a late surge with three straight on holes 15 through 17. She enters the final round in fourth place at even par.
Stephen F. Austin’s Avree Fields stayed in the hunt with a 1-over 73, but her round was anything but ordinary. Fields caught fire on the back nine with five birdies between holes 12 and 18, including three straight to close, and is tied for fifth overall.
East Texas A&M’s Marie Baertz matched Frerichs with a 2-under 70, recording six birdies on the day to move into eighth place individually.
UTRGV’s Barcalova paced the Vaqueros’ surge with a 2-under 70, helping her team post the low round and cut significantly into Houston Christian’s lead heading into the final day.
With just one round remaining, five players sit within four shots of the individual lead, setting up a tightly contested finish Wednesday in San Marcos. Tee times for the final round begin at 8 a.m., with live coverage starting at 11 a.m. on ESPN+.
