Final Round Results
SAN MARCOS, Texas — UTRGV captured its first-ever Southland Conference Women’s Golf Championship in dramatic fashion Wednesday, edging Houston Christian by a single stroke after a chaotic finish at Kissing Tree Golf Club.
The Vaqueros shot an even-par 288 in the final round to finish at 4-over 868, just ahead of Houston Christian at 5-over 869. Incarnate Word placed third at 12-over 876 after posting the low round of the day at 1-under 287.
The championship came down to the 18th hole, where the final pairing of UTRGV and Houston Christian stood tied in the team race. Moments earlier, Pitchayapa Pungpho delivered a clutch birdie on the 18th to pull the Vaqueros even and set the stage for the dramatic finish.
UTRGV’s tee shot sailed long and right into the water, opening the door late. After the penalty, Miriam Barcalova produced the defining sequence of the tournament, a remarkable third shot to recover from trouble and set up a short putt. She then calmly rolled it in for par, securing the one-shot victory and the conference title.
Houston Christian was led by individual medalist Sara Pihlajamaki, who finished at 5-under 211 after a final-round 2-under 70 to earn an automatic bid as an individual to NCAA Regionals.
UTRGV’s balanced effort proved the difference, with key contributions throughout the lineup helping erase the deficit and force the late tie before the final-hole heroics.
Incarnate Word made a late push behind Arwen Settipalli’s 3-under 69, but ultimately came up short as the championship was decided in the final moments.
UTRGV will advance as the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Regionals, with selections set to be announced April 29. Regional play is scheduled for May 11-13.
