FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Kye Lowth, Samson Black, Lamar's Ashton Rainey and East Texas A&M's Romi Griese received Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year honors, the conference office announced Friday. All-academic teams were also announced.
Men's Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year: Kye Lowth, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Lowth finished the year with a 3.93 cumulative GPA while working toward his communications studies degree, including a perfect 4.00 GPA during the spring semester. The junior from Brisabane, Austriaila, won the gold medal in the 5000m at the SLC Indoor Championships, doing so with a time of 14:17.62 that ranks fourth all-time in program history. He also broke the Islanders' indoor 3000m, with a time of 8:05.80 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on February 13.
Men's Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year: Samson Black, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Black, the 2026 Southland Conference Co-Freshman of the Year, finished the year with a perfect 4.00 GPA while working toward his finance degree. He won co-freshman of the year after scoring 14 total points at the SLC Outdoor Championships by winning bronze in the hammer throw and silver in the discus. His mark in the hammer throw set a new school record (58.84m).
Women's Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year: Ashton Rainey, Lamar
Rainey maintained a 3.91 GPA in Biochemistry and placed second in the 5,000-meter at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships. Throughout the indoor season, she competed in the 3000m, 5000m, mile, and DMR in four events with four top-fives. Rainey broke the school's 5,000m record with a time of 16:17.81 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
Women's Outdoor Track & Field Studnet-Athlete of the Year: Romi Griese, East Teas A&M
For the second straight year, Griese maintained a 4.0 GPA while studying Biological Sciences to win student-athlete of the year honors. The junior from Salzkotten, Germany, won gold in the discus at the 2026 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She also qualified for the NCAA West First Round, placing 31st.
The All-Academic teams are voted on by head coaches, sports information directors, and academic/compliance staff members from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.25 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to qualify for All-Academic selection, and have competed in at least 50 percent of their team’s meets. Fifty percent of those nominated earn the honor.
