INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Southland Conference, in coordination with the NCAA, has chosen Stephen F. Austin State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael McBroom to serve as its representative on the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Oversight Committee.
"I’m honored to represent SFA and the Southland Conference at a time of tremendous change in college athletics," remarked McBroom. "FCS football has a strong future, but we need to be intentional about protecting what makes it special while continuing to evolve. I look forward to helping shape policies that strengthen our programs, support our student-athletes, and continue to position FCS football for long-term success."
McBroom's appointment begins immediately and will run through August 31, 2030.
McBroom was named the seventh director of athletics at SFA in April of 2024. Since then, he has helped usher SFA Athletics into a transformative era marked by championship success, stronger academic performance, increased financial stability, and an ambitious vision for the department’s future.
One of McBroom’s first major initiatives was guiding SFA’s return to the Southland Conference. Announced just weeks after his arrival, the move reunited the Lumberjacks with regional rivals in Texas and Louisiana while significantly reducing travel demands, missed class time and expenses for SFA student-athletes. The transition proved immediately successful, as SFA finished second in the Southland Commissioner’s Cup standings during its first year back in the league before rising to the top of the conference in 2025-26.
Beyond competition, McBroom has worked to strengthen the foundation supporting SFA’s long-term success. In March 2026, SFA students approved a dedicated athletics fee with 68 percent of the vote. The new funding structure provides athletics with a stable, dedicated revenue source while freeing more than $1 million annually in existing institutional resources for student programs and experiences across campus. The successful referendum represented a significant vote of confidence from the SFA student body and an important step toward positioning Lumberjack Athletics for the changing financial realities of Division I competition.
McBroom also played a central role in developing SFA’s comprehensive Intercollegiate Athletics Master Plan, created in conjunction with the university’s broader campus and capital planning process and approved as part of the 2026-36 Campus Master Plan. The 15-year athletics roadmap proposes approximately 410,000 net square feet of new and renovated facilities.
As a member of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Oversight Committee, McBroom will work to sustain and advance the Association's mission, traditions, values and reputation and regularly participate in committee meetings and videoconferences, being prepared and well informed.
