Northwestern State Women Repeat as Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Champions

FINAL RESULTS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Northwestern State Demons women's track and field team repeated as champions, taking the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship on Monday afternoon at the Birmingham Crossplex. The Demons are the first team to repeat since Stephen F. Austin in 2019 and 2020.

The Demons ran away with the event, finishing first with a score of 170 points. Lamar was second with 113 points followed by McNeese with 106 and New Orleans with 93. UIW was fifth with 67 points and A&M-Commerce was sixth with 42 points. 

A&M-Corpus Christi (25 points), Southeastern (25 points), Nicholls (11 points), and HCU (8 points) rounded out the final standings.

Most Valuable Performer Sarania Butler led the Demons with an incredible meet, scoring 30.5 points, including a 400-meter victory at 53.52 and a 4x400 victory at 3:42.49. She placed second in the long jump (5.93m), third in the triple jump (12.05m), and fifth in the 200-meter dash (24.18) to round out an incredible meet. 

The speed Demons got other tremendous performances from Vanessa Balde, who won the 60-meter hurdles (8.55) and was a part of the gold medal 4x400 team, and Lynelle Washington, who won the 60-meter dash at 7.41 and followed with a second-place finish in the 200-meter at 23.99. 

The Demons had four sprinters finish in the top six of the 200-meter dash in Washington, Balde (3rd), Butler, and Maygan Shaw (6th). Shaw and Tranasia Jones were also on the 4x400 final.

Additionally, Carnitra Mackey won the shot put at 14.53, while Ianna Roach was one of the top field point-getters with a second-place finish in the shot put and a third place finish in the weight throw. Annamarie Broussard won the women's pole vault last night at 3.85m, with Madison Brown placing third at 3.80m. 

In sprints, Brianna Howard of Lamar took home gold in the 200-meter at 23.70, while Sophia Wolf of New Orleans won the 800-meter at 2:10.45.

In distance, Nia Clatworthy repeated her excellent 5000m performance win another gold, this time in the 3000m with a time of 9:50.43. Alexandra Weir of New Orleans won the mile with a time of 5:01.12.

Myla Tate of A&M-Corpus Christi won the triple jump at 12.19m.
