UIW Holds Off the Field to 3-Peat as Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Champions

FINAL RESULTS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – 
The UIW men's track and field team won their third consecutive Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship on Monday afternoon at the Birmingham Crossplex. The Cardinals are the first team to 3-peat since Sam Houston won four straight from 2016-19.

Going into the final race, the Cardinals held a four-point lead over Northwestern State and a six-point lead over McNeese. A bronze medal in the final event, the 4x400, was enough to wrap up the title for UIW with 109 total points. 

McNeese, who won the 4x400, finished second with 106 points, while Northwestern State placed third with 104 points. Lamar was fifth with 79 points followed by A&M-Commerce with 63 points and New Orleans with 56 points.

HCU (53 points), Southeastern (48 points), A&M-Corpus Christi (40 points), and Nicholls (1 point) rounded out the team standings.

The Most Valuable Performer, Kyle Sieracki, was key to UIW's victory, earning a first-place finish in the heptathlon with 5,370 points and a first-place finish in the pole vault at 5.05m. Sieracki also placed fifth in the 60m hurdles at 8.37 to help solidify the UIW lead. Austin Davisson finished third and Josiah Martinez placed fourth in the pole vault. 

Isaiah Hudgens added a third-place finish in the heptathlon with 5,017 points, while Leo Chauchard was fourth with 4,935 points, all key to the team standings. Hudgens also added a second-place finish in the 60m hurdles at 8.00. 

The UIW team of Corin Burns, Ikenna Opara, Thomas Gignoux, and Eric Quilantan clinched the title with their third-place finish and season's best time of 3:15.14. 

In sprints, Keontaé Gaines of Northwestern State showed up and showed out, winning the 60-meter dash at 6.68 and the 200-meter dash at 20.72. His 200 time was a new SLC Meet Record.

Jalon White of McNeese won the 400-meter dash at 46.88, while Baptiste Depril-Dupre of New Orleans won the 800-meter at 1:52.37.

In distance, Matthew Piquart of HCU won the mile at 4:16.37, while Matthew Hansen of New Orleans set a new PR in the 3000m at 8:17.26. 

In jumps, Lance Hamilton of Southeastern won the triple jump at 15.18m, while on the throws side, Djimon Gumbs of Northwestern State took home gold in the shot put at 19.35m.
