Southland Conference announces Men's Tennis award winners and All-Conference Teams

FRISCO, Texas – The Southland Conference announced the annual Men’s Tennis awards and all-conference teams on Thursday ahead of this week’s SLC Championships.

Winners of the superlative awards were New Orleans' Marcel Volz as Player of the Year, Lamar's Leon Nickel winning Freshman of the Year, UIW's Emilio Vila taking Newcomer of the year, and UIW's Jonas Andersson winning Coach of the Year.

UNO’s Marcel Volz is awarded Player of the Year. The redshirt senior went 3-1 in conference play at No. 1 singles to earn first team all-conference honors. He had a 7-5 overall singles record on the season. He also teamed up with Luke Joujan to go 2-1 at No. 2 doubles and take second team all-conference honors.

Leon Nickel from Lamar is this year's Freshman of the Year. He went 1-3 at No. 3 singles in conference play. He is left-handed and has been ranked high in his retrospective country, Germany.

UIW's Emilio Vila earns Newcomer of the Year. He started the season ranked #124 in the nation. He and partner Tomas Reche went 4-0 in conference play at No. 2 doubles to earn first team all-conference. 

Jonas Andersson wins Coach of the Year honors after leading UIW to a perfect 4-0 conference mark for their conference title.

First team all-conference honorees include New Orleans' Volz at No. 1 singles with a 3-1 Southland record, Nicholls' Collins (3-1) at No. 2 single, UIW's Tomas Reche (3-0) at No. 3 singles, UIW's Andoni Garmendia (4-0) at No. 4 singles, UIW's Arnau Miralles (3-0) at No. 5 singles, and Nicholls' Kotaro Matsumura (3-1) at No. 6 singles.

A&M-Corpus Christi’s Avery Zavala and Etienne Marty (3-0) were first team all-SLC at No. 1 doubles, joined by UIW's Tomas Reche and Emilio Vila (4-0) at No. 2 doubles, and UIW's Noah DeLuna and Arnau Miralles (4-0) at No. 3 doubles.
