THIBODAUX, La. – No. 2 NJIT will meet No. 5 New Orleans in the 2025 Southland Men's Tennis Championship Match after a pair of terrific semifinal matches on Friday afternoon at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
Match 5 – (5) New Orleans 4, (1) Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3
In an incredible match, No. 5 New Orleans continued their march forward as they upset top-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to return to the Southland Men's Tennis Championship Match for the first time since 2023. The Privateers took the doubles point as Matthew Armbruster and Sep de Visser took the narrow tiebreaker for the doubles point, 7-6 (5) at Court 1. The singles side saw two matches across the board as the Islanders took Courts 1, 5, and 6, while New Orleans took court 3 and 4 to even the match at three apiece.
After losing the first set 6-3, Armbruster pulled out a gritty 7-5 second set win, including a break after being tied 5-5 and the only court still in play. Armbruster took that momentum and went to a different level as he used a dominant serve and impressive returns to secure the 6-1 third set win and the match for the Privateers.
Match 6 – (2) NJIT 4, (6) UIW 1
Defending champion and No. 2 seed NJIT returned to the title match after coming from behind to defeat No. 6 UIW, 4-1. The Highlanders dropped the doubles point, but put together a tremendous effort in singles competition to bounce back. Pablo Ramos showed his prowess with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win at Court 1, while Soma Fukuhara took a 6-4, 6-4 win at Court 5. Wil Jenkins inched the Highlanders closer at Court 4, 6-3, 6-2, and German Andujar clinched the match with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 win at Court 6.
