Northwestern State Women win second consecutive Outdoor Title, Shaw sets 400m meet record

HOUSTON – For the second-straight year, the Northwestern State Demons won the Southland Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, with a total of 180.5 points.

Lamar placed second with 117.5 points, while UTRGV came in third with 115 points.

Northwestern State’s Maygan Shaw set a new outdoor championship meet record in the 400m dash with a time of 23.53. The previous record was set last year by her teammate Sanaria Butler (52.56). Shaw is now the 400m championship meet record holder for both indoor and outdoor track and field.

Shaw was also a member of the Demons’ first place relay teams (4x100m, 4x400m) and won gold in the 200m dash.

Elizabeth Khatevi of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi claimed Most Outstanding Performer and Freshman of the Year honors with 30 points. She brought home gold in the women’s 800m, 1500m and 5000m.

SFA’s Basia Mitchell won Newcomer of the Year after scoring a total of 14.50 points for the Lumberjacks. She placed second in the heptathlon, fifth in the 100m hurdles and sixth in the long jump. 

Northwestern State head coach Mike Heimerman was named the Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year for the second straight year. He also won coach of the year for the indoor season, when the Demons took home the title for the third-straight year. 

Additional event winners from day three included East Texas A&M’s Romi Griese (discus), Northwestern State’s Jaslyn Smith (triple jump), East Texas A&M’s Veronika Kramarenko (high jump), Lamar’s Kayli Johnson (100m hurdles), UTRGV’s Nayla Harris (100m) and Southeastern’s Esther Nwanze (400m hurdles).
