FINAL RESULTS
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UTRGV claimed its first ever Southland Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship Monday afternoon at the Birmingham Crossplex. The achievement also marks the Vaqueros first ever Southland postseason title.
The Vaqueros rallied from a deficit to overtake Day 1 leader SFA, finishing with 128 points while the Lumberjacks had 106 and Northwestern State took third with 99.5. East Texas A&M came in fourth with 79 while A&M-Corpus Christi rounded out the top five with 78 and Lamar had 53.
UIW (39.5), McNeese (31), Southeastern (21), HCU (17), Nicholls (eight) and New Orleans (three) made up the final standings.
Nayla Harris' proved one of the Vaqueros leading forces on the track, winning the 60m with a 7.19 and setting a new meet record that she had broken on Wednesday. Harris also claimed third in the 200m with a time of 23.87. Joining Harris on the podium for the 60m was Aniya Heckstall whose 7.43 time earned her a third-place finish in the event.
N Vanee Anchike gave UTRGV a significant lift in the distance races, taking second in the 800m with a 2:10.71 time and breaking the previous meet record with her second-place time in the mile with her 4:40.52 time. She only missed out on the new record by virtue of A&M-Corpus Christi's Elizabeth Khatevi who paced a 4:38.62 time for the new meet record. Khatevi would also set a new meet record in the 3000m with a 9:30.27 time.
Dior Williams contributed another second-place finish to the Vaqueros total, winning silver in the 60m Hurdle with a 8.45 time. Kailey Salazar came in third in the 800m with a 2:11.73 time. Jizzale Davis added on a second-place time in the 200m for good measure, racing a 23.79 time. The Vaqueros capped their campaign by securing second in the 4x400m relay with a 3:42.46 time.
Dynia Lewis of Northwestern State won the 60m Hurdle with a 8.42 time as teammate Rushana Dwyer had a 52.88 time in the 400m, setting a new meet record. Dwyer raced the final leg of yet another meet record-setting performance by the Demons in the 4x400m relay.
SFA's Evaline Chepkoech earned first in the 800m with a 2:10.49 time and Onyah Onyinye Favour of Southeastern won the 200m with a 23.60.
In the field events, Jaslyn Russell of McNeese won the shotput with a 15.23m toss and Layloni Watson of HCU won the triple jump with a mark of 12.52m. Jenneil Jacobie of East Texas A&M took first in the high jump with a 1.75 mark.
