KERRVILLE, Texas — A Southland golf championship came down to the wire for the second week in a row, this instance being on the men's side as UTRGV rallied from a deficit in the first two rounds to move past UIW and win its first men's golf championship since joining the conference. The Vaqueros finished one stroke better than the Cardinals, coming in at 2-over 866 for the tournament.
UIW's second-place total of 3-over 867 notably included Joel Talusen's 5-under 211 which made the Sophomore the tournament's individual medalist. Talusen built his lead with first- and second-round scores of 68 and 67 respectively despite a 76 on the third day of competition.
Jorge Martin Sampedro paced the Vaqueros, finishing in a tie for third with a 1-under 215. Teammates Gabriel Dulon Villoslada came in seventh with a 1-over 217 and Esteban Gonzalez took eighth with a 2-over 218.
HCU had the most impressive final round of any team, shooting 6-under to climb into third place overall with a 7-over 871. New Orleans came in fourth at 16-over 880 while East Texas A&M ended at 17-over 881 and Lamar placed sixth at 22-over 886. Southeastern and Nicholls rounded out the finishers at 25-over 889 and 41-over 905 respectively.
The remaining members of the All-Tournament team were Southeastern's David Marsh who claimed second place (2-under 214), HCU's Mason Napier (1-under 215) and Brooks Pawlak (even 216) and East Texas A&M's Janis Erll (even 216).
