FRISCO – UTRGV’s Jorge Martin Sampedro was named the Southland Conference Men’s Golfer of the Year and Freshman of the Year, while Vaqueros head coach Houston Moore earned Coach of the Year honors, headlining the league’s all-conference selections announced Thursday.
East Texas A&M’s Davis Seybert was named Newcomer of the Year.
Sampedro delivered one of the top seasons in the conference, finishing with a 71.6 scoring average while ranking 412th nationally. The Madrid, Spain native recorded 14 rounds at even par or better and posted five top-10 finishes, including two top-three efforts. He placed second at the Southland Conference Championship, helping lead UTRGV to the team title. Sampedro also set a program single-round record with a seven-under 63 at the JT Poston Invitational and a 54-hole record score of 203.
Seybert made an immediate impact for East Texas A&M, compiling a 72.0 scoring average and ranking 614th nationally. He finished in the top 20 in all nine tournaments this season, including five top-10 finishes and a third-place showing at the LaTour Intercollegiate. Seybert earned Southland Golfer of the Month honors in March and placed 18th at the conference championship.
Moore guided UTRGV to a standout season, leading the Vaqueros to a conference-best No. 134 national ranking while posting a 288.8 team scoring average. UTRGV captured two team titles, including the Southland Conference Championship, and added three additional top-five finishes throughout the year.
