FRISCO, Texas – Last season's Southland regular season champion Lamar will enter the 2024-25 campaign as the preseason favorite for women's basketball, the league announced Thursday. The Cardinals received 19 first-place votes and 236 total points, to claim that placement.
Lamar went 17-1 in Southland play last season but fell to defending champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the conference title game. The Islanders were tabbed third in the preseason poll with 200 points behind Southeastern in second place with 213 points and five first-place votes.
SFA tallied 193 votes for fourth while UIW had 149 and Texas A&M-Commerce had 112. Nicholls totaled 108 with New Orleans earning 109 and 92 for newcomer UTRGV. Northwestern State, McNeese and HCU accounted for the final placements with 67, 61 and 51 points respectively.
Southeastern headlined the preseason all-conference selections with three while Lamar and A&M-Corpus Christi had two. SFA, Nicholls and A&M-Commerce all earned one selection.
The Southland Conference preseason poll is voted on by each head coach and women's basketball sports information director. Each voter ranks their predicted order of regular season finish, not including their own team.
