FRISCO, Texas — Northwestern State forward Vernell Atamah has earned this week's Jersey Mike's Southland Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week award for the opening week of play, the conference office announced Monday.

Atamah got off to a fantastic start this season, scoring 64 points for an average of 21.3 ppg against two power conference teams (Nebraska, Kansas) and an AAC team (Wichita State), leading the team to a dominant victory at WSU. In the win over the Shockers, Atamah poured in 25 points with seven triples to give the Demons an early statement win. The 21.3 points per game she averaged to start the year is the best mark in the Southland, as is her 13 made triples. She is off to a fast start from deep, shooting 13-of-25 from beyond the arc, the best percentage in the conference for a player who has taken at least eight 3-point attempts.
